Sensei Erick Thorne, is the Chief Instructor and Director of the Cranston Studios of Self Defense (specializing in, Togékaido Kenpo, Jiujitsu, Karate Kobudo, Commando Krav Maga). Sensei Thorne, started Boxing at the age of 13 at the O’Rourke Gym, in Providence, R.I. (1974-1977). An affinity for Boxing continued into his tour of duty as a Fleet Marine Force Field Service Corpsman/ Special Operations Technician (1978-1986).

 In fact, Sensei Thorne, would Box in both welterweight and middleweight divisions, and in 1980 won the Fleet Middleweight Championship 34 MAU/MSSG FMFLANT.

In 1982, while stationed at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, Sensei Thorne, was introduced to Grand Master Bo Kong Young, of Young Brothers Tae Kwon Do Associates, and began the study of Tae Kwon Do. He went on to compete in Black Belt division fighting with great success regionally, ultimately winning the World Tae Kwon Do Federation, National Championship on March 22, 1986, in Pittsburgh, P.A.

In 1986, after his final extension of duty serving with the Marine Corps, 2nd ANGLICO/ 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company/ 2nd FSSG, Sensei Thorne, began work in the Bail Bond Industry (1986-1987).

Recipient of the Outstanding Achievement and Professionalism in Corrections Award, presented by Gov. Edward D. DiPrete and Director John J. Moran (1987)

  And, in 1991, as a means of supplementing his operational training as a member of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Department of Correction’s Tactical Team (RIBCO), Sensei Thorne, enrolled in Nick Cerio’s Kenpo Jiujitsu Karate, of Diamond Hill Road in Cumberland, Rhode Island, under the instruction of then, Sensei Mark Sheeley.

In 2003, with the assistance/mentorship of then, Kyoshi Mark Sheeley, and Kensho Ryu International, Sensei Erick Thorne, opened Kensho Ryu Kenpo Jiujitsu Karate, of East Street in Cranston, Rhode Island, his first martial arts studio. 

In 2009, Grand Master Mark Sheeley, and Kensho Ryu International, encourage Sensei Thorne, to open his second school, Togékaido Kenpo Jiujitsu Karate kobudo, of Cranston Street in Cranston, Rhode Island.

In 2012, Sensei Thorne, established what has become an ongoing affiliation with Commando Krav Maga, instituted by Moni Aizik (founder of Commando Krav Maga, T.O.P. Law Enforcement, Smartsafe: Women's Self Empowerment, Win! Real Life Skill for Kids, and Elite Combat Fitness), Sensei Thorne, began his pursuit to incorporate his knowledge of traditional martial arts and the street/combat focused Commando Krav Maga system as a means of preparing the community for the realities of self defense in the 21st century.

Sensei Thorne, is an Alumnae of CCRI, BCC, and Rhode Island College, and has served the State of Connecticut, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, as a Registered Nurse, since 1996.

A great believer in community, Sensei Thorne, has established mentor and anti bully outreach programs, and has worked with the Girl Scouts of America, Cranston Daycare Services, DCYF, Cranston Police Department, Cranston School Department, and PTO, in an ongoing effort to prepare youth and families for the realities of self defense with an eye on personal empowerment and integrity.
